In 1983, the year he joined the firm NORR Toronto (Canada), he won the International Competition for Opera Bastille in Paris to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. In 1984 he founded his own studio, 'Carlos Ott Architects' in France, then expanding to Germany, United Arab Emirates and Canada.

Back in his native Uruguay, he opened his local office.
